Meet Cute's Kaley Cuoco explains how the Peacock Film presents a "Different," "More Honest" Romance.

Although Peacock's Meet Cute appears to be nothing more than a rehash of time-loop movies and romantic comedies, the film's star, Kaley Cuoco, and director, Alex Lehmann, saw enough potential in the project to give it a shot.

We've done everything in romantic comedies and time travel movies. Cuoco told The Hollywood Reporter at the New York premiere of Meet Cute last week, "There was something about this that was unique." As soon as I found out Pete [Davidson] was attached, I thought, "Wow, this is an excellent, unique film concept. It's incredibly uplifting and delightful.

In the movie, Sheila (Cuoco) and Gary (Davidson) go on the same first date over and over again so that she can keep reliving that first spark and make Gary the perfect match by using a time machine.

According to Lehmann, the opportunity to make "maybe a slightly more honest rom-com" drew him to the project. Though I enjoy many other rom-coms, I recognise the high quality of those that stand out to me as unique. Even though a tanning bedtime machine isn't something I usually associate with myself, I felt like I got to tell a true story while working on this one. True-to-life personalities were ours to manipulate in play. When I was trying to make it, I kept thinking, "This is the time to make a romantic comedy.

As the movie progresses, we learn why Sheila keeps reliving her first date with Gary and how she and Gary ultimately work together to break the cycle.

As a result, the film, according to Lehmann, presents a more authentic portrayal of romantic love.

Finding someone who makes you happy is simple, and keeping a relationship alive after three months requires little effort. That's romance to me, especially when you can see that the couple isn't just trying to keep things the way they are for the sake of the relationship. The director told THR at the Meet Cute premiere, "They're trying to support each other and stand by each other as they face their mental health issues and neuroses and stuff." "That's love: acknowledging and appreciating flaws in one another."

Because Sheila and Gary relive the same night multiple times, they must wear the same clothes each time, making it difficult for costume designer Li to come up with unique looks for each reenactment.

Alex [Lehmann] and I worked closely together to find a colour and silhouette of a dress that was like, 'Wow, bam.' because we knew Sheila's clothing had to be instantly recognisable, iconic, and stand out against everyone else that we saw from frame to frame. According to Li, the yellow gingham dress Sheila wore made her stand out as the story's protagonist. Because of this, Li remarked, "We made a conscious effort that every principal character, a lot of the background characters, no one else that we saw was in our colour principal that Sheila had on."

Meanwhile, Li described Gary's outfit of the striped sweater and green chinos as a "deceptively simple costume."

"It blends into the background, and we did that on purpose," Li said. Sheila the film is seen through her eyes and point of view, so Gary is meant to appear to be in the background at first. Everyone else is just like him, he thinks. For some reason, though, she keeps coming back to him. Finding the perfect sweater took us a while because we had to walk a fine line between standing out and blending in.

Even though Sheila and Gary wear largely identical clothes in all timelines, Li hinted that there are some subtle differences.

Depending on the timeline, "you see that Sheila's character, for example, has different earrings from one timeline to the next, possibly different necklace, and different hairstyle," Li said. This is the sort of hidden references or Easter eggs that will keep you entertained throughout the film.
